Croud is looking for a Senior Data Engineer to work in the context of digital advertising and marketing.

Our business continues to grow rapidly, and our industry is evolving. A competitive edge for digital advertisers will increasingly be found in the way that they integrate business and customer data with digital marketing data and advertising platforms. Croud is committed to investing in strategically valuable capabilities, so we’re looking for an experienced data engineer to join our Data & Innovation team. Croud is an agency with a unique operating model that combines proprietary technology with in-house talent, and also the resource of a global network of marketing and advertising experts (currently over 2,000 people). Our technology and access to the network is also packaged for client in-house marketing teams in the form of Serpico. We have a large in-house team of developers and user experience experts.

The Data & Innovation team designs and delivers advanced technical solutions for Croud’s clients. These involve integrating data sources and marketing platforms; and also machine learning for modelling and to provide predicted categorisation and metrics. The end results of our work include enabling new analysis, measurement, metrics for optimisation, audience targeting and campaign management automation.

The successful candidate in this role as Senior Data Engineer would report to the Director of Planning & Insight, and would work closely with the team’s Data Scientist. He or she would also need to collaborate particularly with one or more of: Croud’s Chief Information Officer (CIO), Chief Technology Officer (CTO), and Product Director.

The role has four key purposes:

  • To add additional resource to our team for day-to-day data engineering work.
  • To provide additional expert direction and practical guidance for the way the team incorporates data engineering solutions in client projects.
  • To examine Croud’s history of delivering advanced and bespoke data services to clients; and to collaborate with Croud’s tech team and begin the work of further commercialising and scaling our ongoing client-facing service offering in this area.
  • Considering our current and future service offering, to collaborate with Croud’s Chief Information Officer to continually review and enhance the policies and processes in the Data & Innovation team that will minimise information security risk for Croud and its clients.

Regarding the further commercialising of the data services currently being delivered from Croud’s Data & Innovation team, the potential for efficiency and greater scale, and the information security risk

  • No-one currently in the team and progressed in their career via a professional developer route
  • So some developer skills are self-taught
  • The ways that we work could be made more uniform, e.g. with standards in our dev environments and processes
  • We make use of git and github for version control, but there is room to increase the sophistication of this use
  • We can improve our policies and structure for sharing elements of code across projects
  • We are vigilant of security considerations and there is always room to improve the policies and procedures for information security that are specific to our team

Regarding our plans so far for Croud’s data and innovation proposition, these are based on a core set of products:

  • First-party data integration, i.e. processing business or customer data into e.g. GA360, GMP or Facebook.
  • Profit-based Bidding, i.e. enabling profit metrics (rather than revenue) across ad platforms
  • LTV-modelling and prediction, including integration with GMP, for analysis, audience definitions and bidding strategies
  • Propensity modelling and prediction, e.g. for improving messaging in remarketing
  • Our Creative Intelligence capability which uses various machine learning techniques to direct optimum new creative design for display ads
  • Content categorisation, where we use Machine Learning to interpret and categorise language, in order to produce SEO and content planning insight
  • Customer data platforms, where we will creating lasting strategic data assets for clients: data warehousing disparate first-party data sets, and making the data available for analysis, modelling and activation in ad platforms


The most relevant skills and experience include:

  • Practical data engineering skills
  • Python, including client for Google APIs
  • Google Cloud Platform, including
    • BigQuery
    • Cloud Functions
    • KMS
    • Pub/Sub
    • Scheduler
    • Storage
    • Data fusion
    • Dataflow
    • Dataprep
  • Experience with Azure and AWS would be beneficial
  • Google Marketing Platform and its APIs, including GA360
  • Google Ads and its APIs
  • Facebook Ads and its APIs
  • Data solutions architecture, including data warehousing and orchestration
  • Professional skills and knowledge in information security and data protection
  • Experience working as part of a Software Development Lifecycle
  • Experience in productising and professionalising data science
  • A thorough understanding of client data challenges as well as the potential pitfalls to avoid when implementing solutions

The successful candidate will also have:

  • Degree level education or equivalent / relevant work experience
  • 5+ years of data solutions experience, including data engineering and/or data science and data architecture
  • 3+ years of experience of applying data solutions to digital marketing including on the Google Marketing Platform
  • Interest in and a passion for digital marketing
  • Experience in planning new projects
  • A proven track record of successfully managing projects
  • A proven track record of working to and meeting deadlines
  • Comfortable with G Suite apps (Google Docs, Slides, Sheets, Drive, etc.)
  • Proven time management skills and ability to manage tasks simultaneously
  • Impeccable attention to detail
  • Strong communication, organisation, and presentation skills
  • Experience of working in teams to meet a common goal

Standard hours are from 9.00am to 5.30pm, there’s flexibility if agreed in advance with your line managers (it may also be necessary on occasions to work outside of these hours).
